Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Based on the principles of Chinese medicine, Shiatsu works with the same meridian system. Meridians are channels throughout the body where the Qi or energy circulates.

Through pressure, stretches and rotations of the joints, Shiatsu is designed to release blocks in circulation and energy flow and to boost the flow of healing nutrients to organs, glands, muscles and nerves.

The depth of pressure in Shiatsu varies from gentle to deep, according to preference and comfort level. Each session is designed especially for you and the state you are in on that very day.

The restoration of good circulation to all the tissues helps support the immune system, stimulates the body’s natural ability to heal and balances the nervous system.

These are a few of the conditions Shiatsu can benefit:

  • postural and musculoskeletal problems

  • stress-related conditions

  • backaches

  • sciatica

  • headaches

  • premenstrual problems

  • chronic and acute pain

  • whiplash and other injuries

  • digestive disorders

  • high blood pressure

  • pregnancy and childbirth preparation

  • limited mobility and flexibility

What happens in a Shiatsu session?

When you receive Shiatsu you will lie on a futon on the floor, fully dressed in comfortable, stretchy clothes.

I will use my fingers, palms, elbows and knees to apply comfortable pressure. I will also slowly stretch your muscles and rotate your joints in ways that work your meridians.

During a session you most likely will relax deeply--physically, mentally and spiritually. After your session you are likely to experience an increase in flexibility and a decrease in aches and pains. Most people also enjoy a greater feeling of connectedness between mind and body resulting in a deep sense of calm.

The benefits of stress relief and improved mental and physical health increase with regular sessions.
